Shades vs. Tints vs. Tones
Shades are created by progressively reducing lightness toward black. They make a color deeper and more saturated-looking. Use shades for hover states, borders, or dark UI elements.
Tints go the other direction — lightness increases toward white. Tints create soft, pastel-like variations. They work well for backgrounds, highlights, and secondary surfaces.
Tones reduce saturation while keeping lightness constant. This produces muted, more neutral versions of the color — useful for large background areas, subtle accents, or text that should feel related to the brand color without being too bright.
