The Six Standard Harmonies
- Complementary
- Base + the color 180° opposite on the wheel. Maximum contrast between two colors.
- Analogous
- Base + colors at ±30°. Feels cohesive and natural.
- Triadic
- Three colors 120° apart. Balanced and vivid.
- Tetradic (Square)
- Four colors 90° apart. Rich and complex — best when one color dominates.
- Split-Complementary
- Base + two colors adjacent to its complement (±30° from 180°). Offers contrast without the intensity of a direct complement.
- Monochromatic
- Five lightness variations of the same hue. Always harmonious, but can lack contrast.
Choosing the Right Harmony
For most projects, analogous or monochromatic palettes work well as a starting point. Use complementary or triadic palettes when you need a color to pop. Tetradic palettes suit complex UIs with many distinct sections.
