History
How It Works
Each click generates a color by picking random red, green, and blue channel values between 0 and 255. The result is converted into every common CSS color format so you can paste it directly into your stylesheet, design file, or documentation.
The Generate Similar button takes the current color and adjusts its hue, saturation, and lightness by small random amounts, producing a variation that stays in the same neighborhood on the color wheel.
When to Use a Random Color
Random colors are useful for quick prototyping, placeholder content, data visualization labels, generative art, game development, and creative experiments. If you need a coordinated set of colors, try the Palette Generator or Color Combination Generator.
FAQ
Are the colors truly random?
Yes. Each channel (red, green, blue) is generated independently using Math.random(), giving an even distribution across the entire sRGB color space.
Can I undo a color I accidentally skipped?
Every generated color is saved in the history row below the tool. Click any swatch in the history to bring that color back.
How do I generate a random color in a specific hue range?
Pick a color close to the hue you want, then click Generate Similar repeatedly. For precise control, use the Color Picker or start with the color wheel on the Harmony Generator.
