How Extraction Works
The image is loaded into a canvas at a reduced resolution for fast processing. The pixel data is then analyzed using a median-cut quantization algorithm, which recursively divides the color space along whichever channel (red, green, or blue) has the largest range. Each resulting group is averaged to produce a representative color.
The result is sorted by lightness so the palette reads naturally from light to dark.
Use Cases
- Building a website color scheme from a brand photo.
- Finding the dominant colors in a piece of artwork.
- Creating complementary palettes for social media posts.
